Description

Sardina pilchardus is the common name for various small oily fish in the herring family. In the UK the name is legally restricted following a court ruling in 1915 in favour of the young of the pilchard caught off Sardinia and Brittany. In the village of Son Carrio in the North East of Mallorca on Shrove Tuesday there is a Festival of the Funeral of the Sardine, whereby a larger than life sardine is paraded round the village accompanied by mourners dressed in black.

The greatest concentration of sardines in the world takes place every year off the eastern coast of South Africa, when in early winter huge numbers migrate northwards in a narrow band of cooler, nutrient rich water. With global warming the sardine and anchovy is now being caught regularly in Scottish coastal waters.
